Your Journey to a Healthier You Starts Here
Are you struggling with weight-related health issues? Discover how Brisbane General & Obesity Surgery can help you achieve your weight loss goals with our innovative gastric balloon procedures and weight loss solutions.
As the only clinic in Queensland offering all available gastric balloon options, our program delivers our patients an average of 10-15% of their body weight in the first 16 weeks. Gastric balloons are a non-invasive solution that involves placing a soft, silicone balloon endoscopically or swallowing a deflated vegan polyurethane balloon which is then filled with a saline solution in the stomach. By occupying space in the stomach, the balloon creates a feeling of fullness, allowing you to consume smaller portions and curb your appetite.
The gastric balloon is designed to be a temporary solution, typically remaining in the stomach for a period of 4-12 months depending on the type of balloon that’s right for you. During this time, the balloon serves as a tool to help you develop healthier eating habits and an active lifestyle, setting the stage for long-term weight management success with the guidance of our team.
Our gastric balloon procedure is ideal for:
At BGOS, we offer a diverse range of gastric balloon options to cater to your specific weight loss goals and preferences. All balloon options include smart scales paired to a phone app to track progress, along with instant messaging for support and built in artificial intelligence coaching.
The Allurion Gastric Balloon offers a non-invasive weight loss solution that doesn’t require endoscopy. Patients simply swallow the balloon in a capsule, which inflates in the stomach and remains for about four months.

The Orbera / BIB balloon is a silicone device placed in the stomach via endoscopy and filled with saline. It stays in the stomach for up to 6 to 12 months, promoting reduced food intake and healthier eating habits.
The Spatz Adjustable Balloon is the only gastric balloon that can be modified after placement, allowing for ongoing adjustments. It can remain in the stomach for up to a year, offering extended weight loss support.

The gastric balloon is ideal for individuals with a BMI of 27 and above who haven’t succeeded with traditional weight loss methods and are looking for a non-surgical option.
The gastric balloon is typically left in place for 4 to 12 months, during which time you'll receive ongoing support and guidance.
Most patients lose 10-15% of their total body weight within the first 4 months. However, results vary depending on individual commitment to diet and exercise.
With proper diet and lifestyle changes, which we'll help you implement, you can maintain your weight loss long-term.
The gastric balloons are minimally invasive and are typically not painful as there are no surgical incisions.
Depending on the type of balloon, they inserted either endoscopically (BIB, Orbera, Spatz) or swallowed (Allurion). The procedure typically takes about 15-30 minutes, and most patients go home the same day.
The majority of patients will experience nausea, vomiting, or discomfort for the first few days after the procedure, but these symptoms are temporary and usually subside as your body adjusts to the balloon. Our team will be there to help and support you through the entire process.
You'll typically start a week before with a very low calorie / liquid diet. This will continue for another week after the balloon is placed before we transition you to solid foods. A dietitian will provide a tailored eating plan to help you achieve optimal results.
If the balloon deflates or leaks early, depending on the type, it may pass through your digestive system naturally (Allurion) or may need to be removed endoscopically (BIB, Orbera, Spatz). Rarely, the balloon may need to be removed laparoscopically (key-hole surgery). It is vital to contact our team immediately if you think this may have occurred.
Pre-procedure assessments may include a physical exam, blood tests, x-rays and a psychology review. Your doctor or nurse will give you specific instructions, but you’ll likely need to avoid eating or drinking for several hours before the procedure.
Thanks to Dr Lim and his team for leading me through this great journey of weight loss, a magic 25kg would have not been successful without the Allurion balloon implant, this has made me realise a helping hand and changing of habits can change your life, I recommend this procedure to anyone who is wanting a good start into weight loss without undertaking surgery. Also like to thank the nutritionist who have also helped me with this fantastic 6 months.
